MEDITATION

Thirty years ago, after the hippy wave that swept the world over the past decade abated, the West found a new science that they can make as a matter of life is meditation. This science they had not responded seriously, because of the presumption of those who associate meditation with the science of demons, witches sciences and so on. They are afraid that learning meditation, his soul can not be saved and closed the doors of heaven for ever

The traditional conservative thinking is not too be taken seriously by the hippies who think that they are a slave to dogma for centuries and boxed in full view of the scope of suspicious of the views and ways of life. Therefore, they seek more friendly to nature, they generally have a much more open, not tied to the dogma, so ready for something new and very 'exciting' is meditation.

Now the development of western meditation exponentially increased rapidly, so rapidly that meditative training development everywhere, by all parties. The development of this meditation is phenomenal, so the magazine times on August 4, 2003 issue of lowering meditation as the main article.

The western world is now welcoming meditation with more enthusiasm because once they put on research and experiments proved there are great benefits to be had by those who practice mediation, which is in addition to mental health to physical health as well (in the materialism of the present era, the physical benefits are considered more favorable than spiritual benefits).

At the beginning of the book Visuddhi Magga meditation guidance mentioned that life is full of clutter, and content Visuddhi is a way to decipher the tangle. One way of meditation by focusing on the four foundations of mindfulness (satipatthana). Lack of attention to the contemporary man is very severe, because it fit his time so many items that make us less attention to ourselves.

In recent years western psychiatrists began to recognize human disorders these days, and they call this disorder with the term "Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or attention disorders less (CTF)." Attention is meant here is the attention / awareness to all of our activities with caution, not a concern of parents, friends and so on. All human beings have this abnormality lay in varying intensities, it seems in line with Visuddhi Magga mentions that the CTF is why the world is tangled.

Why do those who practice meditation reduced stress more and more self-control than those who do not practice meditation? In research conducted by Richard Davidson of the University of Wisconsin using a machine brain images (Brain Imaging) was meditation makes the activity in the prefrontal cortex of the left to the right (just right behind the forehead), the left shift to the right. According to Davidson's research with regular meditation, the brain changed from opposition to acceptance stressful causing properties are satisfied and receive. For the people who have negative traits are more likely to use the right prefrontal, whereas left prefrontal more associated with enthusiasm, more on an interest, more relaxed and more likely to be happy though somewhat less materialistic.

There are also experiments carried out with regard to psychiatric problems, at a rehabilitation center near Kings county north Seattle group of recidivist sentence imposed relating to drug or alcohol-related crimes due but without violence. Vipassana meditation practice taught for ten days, 11 hours a day, alternately sitting and walking meditation. Those selected are those that are in need of rehabilitation, because it requires a determination of the participants to be able to hold meditation meditation sessions for 11 hours a day. Some of them are as much as 56% of the practicing Vipassana returned to prison compared to 75% who do not practice Vipassana recidivists. Besides practicing Vipassana recidivists who use less drugs and alcohol, and less depressed. Wendy Weisel author of "Daughters of Absence" most of his life passed by drinking anti anksietas (anxiety) before practicing Vipassana three years ago. After practicing Vipassana it at all apart from drugs.

In another test conducted on advanced meditators actually has the ability to recognize objects quickly, meditator recognizes the mood in a series of facial expressions, which are exchanged at thirty per second expression! The ability of the meditator is beyond the ability of groups considered are experts in this field such as psychiatrists, customs officers, and agents of secret intelligence. Could one time they also have to learn meditation because included in the curriculum?

Eric Lander, who was one of the leaders of the Human Genome Project loudly predicted at a conference of scientists and Buddhist scholars at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), that is not impossible that in the future the United States Department of Health will advocate to practice meditation sixty minutes a day , five times a week.

Jon Kabatt-Zinn who studied Buddhism in the 60's and established clinic stress reduction (stress reduction clinic) at U Mass medical center in 1979, has helped 14,000 people treat their pain without drugs, among the patient is suffering from cancer , AIDS, acute pain. Same way that the Vipassana, which teaches them to focus and see the shape of their pain, and trying to accept the pain rather than fight it. Lately, he is studying a group of patients suffering from psoriasis, a disease that is incurable and usually are treated by asking the patient to come to the hospital, installing anti-UV sunglasses and stood naked in the box strong ultraviolet light and heat. This treatment leads to stress in most patients. Kabat-Zinn provides therapy meditation to reduce stress on the irradiated patients, in two experiments, which involved meditating their skin becomes clean four times faster than those who did not participate skin meditation. In another study, he along with Richard Davidson of the University of Wisconsin at Madison provides an injection of influenza in a group of meditators and non-meditators new study, to measure the levels of antibodies in their blood. The researchers also measured their brain activity to see mental activity shifts from right brain to left brain. As a result, those who practice meditation not only have more antibodies in the fourth week and eighth week after the injection, but their mental activity has shifted more antibodies more responses. In other words, meditation technique is better then the immune system healthy.

Serious research on meditation began in the earliest recorded in 1967 by Dr. Herbert Benson, a medical professor at Harvard Medical School.Secretly, every night, putting 36 people meditator samatha bhavana (transcendental) to the lab, to measure heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, and temperature rectum. Upon inspection, it turns out they were an average of 17% less oxygen, lower heart rate 3 beats per minute, theta waves emitted (which usually appears before bed) increased, but the pattern is not the same as the emission wavelength sleepers. A few years later, Dr. Gregg Jacobs, a professor of psychiatry at the same university, working with Professor Benson, recording EEG (electro encephalograph) elektrografi brain waves in two groups, one taught meditation, while others are allowed to listen to the tapes that inner calm. After a few months, those who practice meditation produce theta waves greater than those who listened to the tapes, beta waves while they were being dropped off.

With the invention of brain imaging studies of meditation becomes more advanced. In 1997, Andrew Neuberg neuroscientist at the University of Pennsylvania examined a group of Buddhist meditators by inserting liquid dye in the blood. Neuberg waiting in the next room, connected by rope to the meditator in the room next to it, then pulled the cord to inject liquid dye into their blood, after the meditator enter the state of deep meditation. From this experiment it was shown that brain activity does not stop when the subject was practicing meditation, but simply block the incoming information from the parietal lobe that lost sense of space of time, and then she felt one with the universe.

How is the situation that actually happens in the process of meditation? Actual circumstances experienced by those who meditate, after entering the state anuloma the sensory information coming in is not given due attention on the object of concentration fused picture of the inner or nimitta (the samatha bhavana), whereas only concerned Vipassana object-name form. So that looks at brain scanner while it is as if the meditator is similar to but not the same bed. Shown in the brain scanner, the information will go to the parietal lobe, respectively. Actually, this is the work that the thalamus is the gateway information from the nerves in our senses and deliver data to the brain and block other signals remain on track.

What is the process that actually happens in the brain during meditation? There are some parts of the brain are involved directly in the process of meditation, these are:

1. The frontal lobe, is useful in analyzing, planning, emotion, and self-awareness. During meditation, the frontal cortex tend to inactivity.

2. Parietal lobe, useful for processing information from the senses about the world around us, to give the impression of space and time orientation.During meditation slows activity in the parietal lobe.

3. Thalamus, is the gate to the door of the senses, which focus sensor to transmit data over the stop signal to the brain and other on track. Meditation reduces the flow of information coming into droplets like it.
