12 That You Really Should Know About SEO

12 That You Really Should Know About SEO

Studies show that more than 90% of all online users use search engines to find what they're looking for, whether products / services, or just plain old information.

The twelve of the following will, I hope, summarize the philosophy, approach and methodology to the SEO question which both sound and effective, along with giving some helpful insight into the industry itself.

1. Content. Content. Content.
Effective, professional, optimized Copywriting is a factor, the most important in any SEO campaign. Search engines index websites based on content found on every page of the site. With a thorough understanding of language and grammatical conventions combined with intensive research, to find and exploit the market focus, one can move the site into the upper echelon of the "SERP's" (Search Engine Result Pages) in a methodical and ethical manner.

2. Web Log Analysis.
Measure everything, at least two times, then check again. While I will be the first to say that many of the procedures that make up website optimization is more art than science, one needs to take a very scientific approach to the business. This is done by methodically keeping track, and analyze web site logs. There are some special software that makes the job easier but at a minimum, people need to keep a close eye on visitors to the site and their activities while on site. No matter how well planned strategy, largely theoretical until proven by the results, which can only be measured by logging, and a thorough analysis of their content.

3. No one can guarantee # 1 ranking on Google or other search engines.
They are both promising achievements will optimize for such vague search term phrases (such as, "green stunted widgets with purple Polka-dots and icing") that nobody is likely to seek, or they make false claims, which they have no intention of keeping , or they have the inside edge at Google, something they will loose, quickly, when honest people in Google to find out about it. Another option, that they would take the money and run, worth mentioning here but I'll be polite.

4. Some things are just plain silly.
You do not need to submit your site to 50,000 search engines. Businesses that offer this service are suspect, at best. 85% of the search results on the Internet come from one search engine, which, if you have one link from an established website, or better yet, the directory, will find your site just fine, on it's own. Four (4) search engines account for more than 90% of traffic on the web. As for any supposed benefit which may accrue from that contained in a search engine is clear in Botswana which specializes in safaris to the Kalahari Desert and receives 7 hits per day, well, you know.

5. SEO is not Pay-per-click.
While nobody would argue the effectiveness of getting increased traffic and sales, through well planned, pay-per-click campaigns, the fact remains that the conversion rate is generally low and they stop the current "pay" stops. With a well planned and executed SEO campaign, while results may take a little longer, they continue to produce, and in fact grow, long after the job is done and paid. Quite often we have found that after a thorough optimization of the site, only minor adjustments are needed on an ongoing basis, especially those associated with new content and / or sale of new goods or services.

6. SEO is not witchcraft, Druidism, shamanism.
It also does not require special chants, ceremonial fires, or robe, even though some of us like to howl at the full moon, on the occasion. There is no "Top Secret" SEO practices that reputation can not tell clients, judges, or her mother, in this case. The nature of the Internet is always cooperative and no nothing about SEO that can not be learned, with a heavy dose of time and money. A leading SEO company will provide details of an item per item just how money is spent. Be careful if you feel the atmosphere of a secret or a reluctance to answer any questions. Although there are technical points which might take some background to understand, if someone has a solid picture of the overall situation, a simple explanation should be fairly easy to come by.

7. Do-it-yourself SEO.
Yes, you can run your own SEO campaign and find a leading SEO company to help plan and organize for you. Approximately one half of my own clients to do some part of the actual work itself, or have an in-house personnel who are dedicated to do it, after a discussion about the purposes and objectives of the business / website, a comprehensive website analysis, comprehensive search phrase research, and focused instruction on the ways and means for achieving high SERPs. This introductory course is followed by detailed suggestions and methods that the client can then implement themselves or hire someone else to do. Average savings: 30-40%.

8. Phased implementation.
While many companies spend thousands of dollars per month in Search Engine Optimization, an alternative is available that will pay dividends to you in increased sales and leads without the high initial investment. The most important consideration is having a reputable firm handle the initial evaluation and suggested optimization planning first. Experiments and error method will cost much more, in the long run, with or without the desired results. After studying the plan and provide a workable budget that you can implement the plan as finances allow.

9. Remember the adage, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Old
Once there was this more true than in the world of SEO. While concrete and measurable gains will always come from well thought out and executed optimization strategy, the Internet is a competitive media and we all want to be number one. Accept that a steady upward movement, over time, will put you in front of the world flash followed by a crash.

10. A thought to ponder.
At stake, in the race for the top, is the existence of your website, your business, and quite possibly your reputation. Beware of any "shortcuts" or less than ethical schemes that anyone might suggest to further your business goals. When all is said and done are you, business owners, who bear responsibility for any company or individual you hire. Request know exactly what strategy and what steps are being taken to implement them. If it seems, in at least suspicious, ask and get clarification. In this case, not only Ignorance is not bliss, it could very well be the beginning of the end for your business.

11. All incoming links are not created equal.
Both are relevant to your business and website subject matter and the PR value of the incoming link determine how valuable they are for your own PR ranking. With Google starting the trend, nothing new there, and some of the others trailing behind, the days of reaching all inbound links, in any way possible, is lost. Not only will low ranked and / or irrelevant inbound links not help, they will, in fact, lead to punishment. Link farms, free-to-link all the schemes, automated link accumulation software, or other modes that do not carefully screen the links and web sites they came from will, in the long run, more harm than good.

12. This is more than just facts and figures.
The relationship between online business and SEO, perhaps, one of the closest business relationships. To be effective, SEO must know not only the facts and figures relating to the business, but he must know something of the dreams and aspirations of business people. Things that do not normally come out in the prospectus are often invaluable information when searching for "fit" into the complex world of the Internet. My own clients sometimes ask, because the frequency of my calls and emails in the early phases, "Am I your only client?" I usually laugh and say something to the effect that until I know your business almost as well as you do, yes, you are the only one that counts.
