10 Biggest Web Design Mistakes

10 Biggest Web Design Mistakes

There are many mistakes in the world of web design. Let's see what I believe to be the 10th largest.

1. Too Many Ads.
When you try to make money from your website, it's too easy to flood your site with ads. Put yourself in the place of your users and look carefully at your site and ask yourself if the ad was annoying. Does the site look like a source of information or it feels more like a shareholder-pages for advertising?

2. Plugin Overload.
You have to keep the plugin use a maximum of 1 species per page. If you have Flash, then you can not have a media player, or if you use Java, no Flash. It's not as bad as using the same plugin twice, however.

3. Flash intro.
Please, do not use a Flash intro on your website. They have been so excessive that they become universally mocked.

4. Unclear Layout and Navigation.
Many sites, especially business sites, suffer from several types of diseases where a very simple task takes 10 steps. If a user asks you how to do something on your site, then you need to improve layout and navigation. If there are certain tasks people want to do often, placing them in the front yard.

5. No Marking for External Links.
There are 2 kinds of links: internal (to other parts of your site) and externally (to other sites). For the sake of your users, it's better if you mark external links, either by making them different colors or using a kind of symbol (box with arrow is the usual one). It's also good to make external links open in a new window, so that people do not leave your site altogether when they click on them.

6. Connecting clear.
Some web pages are designed to show a link only if people put their mouse over them. While this may make the design look nicer, not very user friendly. Instead, use a clear contrasting color to the link, and further underlines them. This makes them more visible to users, making it more user friendly.

7. Email Link labeled.
Always clearly mark the link that will send email (mailto link) with 'email' word. If you turn click on the name to send email, you will disturb users who are expected to know more about the person.

8. Broken Link.
You should check your links regularly to ensure that they are all still working. There's nothing worse than finding a site that looks useful, only to find that has not been updated in years, so most of the links do not work. While most websites do not walk alone after a while, it does not mean that you should ignore critical care.

9. Strange Fonts.
Stick to the most common web fonts: that pretty much just Arial, Georgia, Tahoma and Verdana. If you use fonts that are more obvious, so most users will not have them - and those who will find your text hard to read. The only place for non-standard fonts in the logo or title, and then only if they are displayed as images.

10. Text size bad.
It is important to keep your text around the standard size. Making text too big or too small makes it hard to read and annoying for many users. The best thing you can do is use relative text size (not pixels) that allows the browser to respect the user's desired text size. You should also consider offering buttons on your site to decrease or increase the font size.
